Neuro Sympathetic Reset: Our Baseline Treatment
"It's like restarting your computer. NSR resets your sympathetic nervous system back to its original state… It IS an emotional reboot!"
- Dr. Michael Louwers, Staff Physician
History of Neuro Sympathetic Reset (NSR)
  • Stellate Ganglion Block (Medically used for over 100 years)
  • Used to treat pain in the head, neck, back and chest
  • Pioneered by Dr. Eugene Lipov to help treat menopause in 2005
  • Further discoveries to treat PTSD(I) in 2008
  • Began Dual Injection in 2014, Dual-Sided treatments in 2015
  • SGB is commonly used for pain relief, its off-label use is now being effectively used to treat additional modalities such as anxiety, depression, shame, ADHD, Long Covid, Sexual Dysfunction, Hypervigilance, Insomnia, and more being discovered every day.
What is a Stellate Ganglion?
A Stellate Ganglion is a bundle of sympathetic nerves located on both sides of the neck which controls the brain's "Fight, Flight or Freeze" response.
What Affects the Stellate Ganglion?
  • After experiencing a traumatic event or a series of long-term stressors, it activates the brain's fight or flight response.
  • The fight or flight response turns on and sometimes "gets stuck on" – many people feel like they are in a "frozen" state – no fight or flight…
  • Leads to extra nerve growth in the brain, causing over stimulation.
  • The over stimulation of the sympathetic nerves leads to PTSD(I) symptoms like hypervigilance, paranoia, anxiety, depression and other post-traumatic stress symptoms.
How does NSR Work?
NSR is an ultrasound-guided anesthetic injection performed for the purpose of anesthetizing the Stellate Ganglion.
Ropivacaine is a long-acting anesthetic used during NSR treatments. It is commonly used for spinal blocks, acute pain management, and nerve blocks.
Treatment begins with a two injections in the right side of the neck, normally followed by the left side the following day or shortly thereafter.
The injection reduces extra nerve growth and over stimulation that occurs after traumatic experiences.
NSR regulates the overactive sympathetic nervous system, resetting the "fight or flight" response to its baseline – it "RESETS" the "computer."
What is the Impact of NSR?
  • Can provide relief in as little as 10 minutes.
  • Relief of symptoms can continue for months and even years to follow.
  • Diminishes over-stimulation of the amygdala (the emotional center), aka the "fear center."
  • Reduces symptoms of emotional trauma like fear, anxiety, depression, hypervigilance and more.
  • Essentially reverses the impact of the trauma that led to the symptoms being experienced.
During the Treatment
The treatment is performed with an ultrasound to guide the precise placement of the medication, allowing for the safest and most effective outcome. The injection site is cleaned, and a local anesthetic is given to minimize discomfort. The injection should be relatively painless. Warmth or numbness may be felt in your neck or arm during and after treatment.
After the Treatment
  • May temporarily experience weakness or numbness in your arm and face, drooping of the eyelid (Horner Syndrome), raspy or hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing and a possible release of exaggerated emotions.
  • These symptoms are positive indicators that the medicine was placed in the correct area and are expected and completely normal.
  • Symptoms should subside within a few hours.
  • A driver must be present to drive you home, and driving is restricted for the remainder of the day.

What Our Patients are Saying

YouTube

“The (NSR) block just seems to be the gift that keeps on giving…” Shaynee, 3 weeks post-treatment

Shaynee describes the effects that the Neuro Sympathetic Reset (NSR) continues to have on her life.

"The (NSR) block seems to just be a gift that keeps on giving. I never realized how stuck I felt…"
What Our Patients are Saying
"To have a release of the constant sensations, racing thoughts, feelings and misfirings that I felt like I was experiencing for no reason, along with the tightness in my chest, was such a relief. I just started crying. It feels really good. I feel like I can breath deeper."
What Our Patients are Saying
"I'm feeling more calm. I used to have a hard time saying no to people I love. I'm doing so much better now at setting clear boundaries for myself. It will be an adjustment for my husband. We're saving up to get the treatment for my husband. I find myself turning on the radio now and enjoying it so much more than having the TV on. Overall I am just so much more calm."
What Our Patients are Saying
"I just had so much fun and laughed so hard; I probably could have embarrassed myself. But I wasn't embarrassed. And I just kept thinking, that's such a neat experience."
What Our Patients are Saying
"I thought because I didn't really have trauma that I knew of, that NSR wouldn't work for me. I was wrong. The relief I am experiencing now that I have had the treatment is life-changing. I assumed because I am in my 60's I was supposed to be slowing down with less energy and clarity. Again, I was wrong. I feel entirely reset and have gotten more done in the week since my treatment than I have in a month or maybe even a year. I am a BELIEVER of NSR!"
